Born and raised in and around New York City, Robert Hurwitt moved to the Bay Area to pursue a Master's Degree in English at
UC Berkeley in 1964. After early stints writing for the Berkeley Barb and the East Bay Express in the 1970's and 1980's,
Hurwitt became the lead theater critic for the San Francisco Examiner in 1992. He finished his career writing for the San
Francisco Chronicle from 2000-2016. Hurwitt received the Theater Bay Area Legacy Award in December, 2016.
